gutenberg galaxie

It seems that the physiognomy of the history of typography must be read from the constellation of stars that has, since McLuhan, been called the Gutenberg Galaxy. This series is devoted to the winners of the Leipzig Gutenberg Prize and aims to promote this astronomy monographically — a “star cult,” so to speak. Working within the format of Johannes Gutenberg’s 42-line-per-page Bible, the winner is given the opportunity to place his or her work into book form.

Álvaro Sotillo

Sotillos typography can only be called “delicate” and he tests it on the most blandest of materials: Encyclopedias. Even those who are already familiar with all the routines can benefit from Sotillo’s typographical finesse. Particularly for European eyes the typographic work of the Venezuelan Sotillo is the discovery of a new continent and a lesson in invigorated design.
